San Diego Unified School District Ethnic Studies

We respectfully acknowledge that the Kumeyaay people are the original inhabitants and caretakers of these lands, now known as San Diego. Despite the attempted genocide and ongoing impacts of colonization, the Kumeyaay spirit remains unbroken and their traditions continue to thrive as they carry the memories of their ancestors who bravely resisted cultural erasure and fought to protect their land and way of life. In honoring their legacy, we pledge to uphold their cultural heritage and right to safeguard their sacred connection to the land for future generations. With gratitude and strength, we stand with the Kumeyaay, embracing the past while forging a brighter tomorrow.
